Prior to health care reform legislation (ACA), children graduating from college and searching for a first job often did not have any health insurance. Among the first items that the Obama plan mandated was the ability to cover children to age 26 as dependents under family coverage at no additional premium. This became effective for any plan with an implementation or anniversary date after 9/23/2010. If your children were terminated from your plan because they “aged out”, they can now rejoin the plan at renewal. Your child does not need to be an IRS (Sect.152) dependent for this benefit to be available. The child can even be married and be covered under your plan (not the spouse or any children). Age is the only consideration. Check to see if this change assists you.
